RHS CSI TEAM IS NUMBER ONE IN THE REGIONAL CSI CHALLENGE AT STONY BROOK U.
On June 6, 2011 Riverhead High School took home an engraved plaque and a large, beautiful, hard-won trophy for 1st place in the 11th annual CSI Challenge held at Stony Brook University. The 36 high schools competing from across Long Island, New York City, Massachusetts and Connecticut included Three Village and Brooklyn Tech.
“This is an amazing accomplishment when you realize our team beat out 36 teams including Brooklyn Tech, who placed second in the Challenge,” states Superintendent of Schools Nancy Carney. “I’m very proud of our team!”
Riverhead team members included Kiana Wiwczar- lead investigator, as well as Josh Bieling, Nicole Brenton, Kristin Gevinski, Shauna Huizing, Elliot Jones, Jessica Langdon, Mariah Messina, Paige Molinari, Michael Skinner, Brian Weinhardt, and Elizabeth Wells. The team advisors were Kelly Evers and Susan Monahan.
After reading a detailed murder scenario, each team of students was assigned an identical crime scene containing real physical evidence, including fingerprints, hair, fibers, foot and teeth impressions, bones, and bullets The students then collected, preserved and examined the evidence in a crime lab and interrogated costumed actors representing suspects to solve the murder during the 10-hour competition.
“The competition allowed the students to use the skills they have been practicing all year in forensics class. They applied forensic techniques, deductive reasoning, math skills, and cooperative learning. They worked hard and had a great time in the process. As a former Forensic Scientist at Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s Office, I found it to be a great opportunity for students to see that it’s not as quick and easy as they make it out to be on television. I was very impressed with their performance and received a lot of positive feedback from the competition evaluators. It was a great day!” related team advisor Kelly Evers. (www.forensicsworld.com/)
