Parents as Reading Partners: PARP 2013: Catch a Whale of a Tale
Monday, March 11th - Family Reading Night/Red Cross Water Safety
Riley Avenue School invited students and their families to school on the first night of the PARP Reading Week to hear parent, faculty and administrator volunteers share a book with a craft. The kids brought along their favorite beach towel to sit on to get in the mood. Books were grouped by age, K – 2nd and 3rd & 4th. Each story was followed by a craft. Additionally, the American Red Cross gave a Water Safety presentation in the cafeteria. As a special treat, there were some “fishy” characters to welcome all students.
Tuesday, March 12th — Guest Reader Day
TUESDAY WAS GUEST READERS DAY-- all the students were treated to a guest reader in their classrooms. Many community members and administrators, including Superintendent Nancy Carney, were in the building throughout the day. They all volunteered their time to read a book, to show our children the importance of reading and the impact literacy has on our community.
Wednesday, March 13th—Dress Your BEST Day
Wednesday was Spring picture day (really!). All the students had their pictures taken, and they looked great!
Thursday, March 14th— Poem in your Pocket Day and Whale Exhibit
All the students copied a poem from a book, the internet, or wrote their own. They wrote it on a piece of paper, put it in their pocket, and brought it to school. They then shared heir poems with their class and anybody else who stopped them to find out which poem they had chosen.
Atlantis Marine World will bring their life size whale to Riley Avenue School. All students had the opportunity to explore this exciting exhibit. Students were led through four hands-on centers in the midst of the full size whale. It was a tremendous end to a whale of a week.

Thursday & Friday, March 14/15th—Whale Exhibit
The students who didn't get to see the whale exhibit on Thursday got to see it on Friday. Parent volunteers helped figure out the total number of minutes each class read (outside school) Lastly, all students received a handmade bookmark for participating in PARP.
